Phragmosiphon was named by Flower (1956) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren]. Its type is Phragmosiphon septiferum.

It was assigned to Proterocameratidae by Crick (1981); and to Proterocameroceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Hook and Flower (1977) and Evans (2011).
