Parapiloceras was named by Obata (1939) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l O Aren-u Sepkoski's reference number: 298,524 Sepkoski's age data: O Aren Sepkoski's reference number: 298]. Its type is Piloceras invaginatum.

It was corrected as Piloceras by Sepkoski (2002) and Evans (2011).

It was assigned to Endocerida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Piloceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Evans (2011).
