Piloceras was named by Salter (1859) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l O Aren-u Sepkoski's reference number: 298,524 Sepkoski's age data: O Aren Sepkoski's reference number: 298]. Its type is Piloceras invaginatum.

It was assigned to Endocerida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Piloceratidae by Ulrich et al. (1943), Teichert et al. (1964), Crick (1981) and Evans (2011).
