Protocyptendoceras was named by Cecioni (1965) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem Sepkoski's reference number: 298]. It is not extant. Its type is Protocyptendoceras fuenzalidae.
It was assigned to Proterocameratidae by Crick (1981); to Endocerida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Proterocameroceratidae by Cichowolski (2009) and Kröger and Lefebvre (2012).
