Taxonomy
Palaeaster imbricatus was named by Salter (1865). Its type specimen is unknown and is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Tetraster imbricatus by Schuchert (1915); it was recombined as Salteraster imbricatus by Spencer (1918) and Owen (1965).
