Stenosiphon was named by Flower (1956) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren]. Its type is Stenosiphon sandoi.

It was assigned to Proterocameratidae by Crick (1981); to Endocerida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Proterocameroceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Evans (2011).
