Subpenhsioceras was named by Shimizu and Obata (1936) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren].

It was assigned to Endoceratoidea by Teichert et al. (1964); to Piloceratidae by Crick (1981); and to Endocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
