Palaeaster montanus was named by Shchurovskiy (1874). Its type specimen is at the Bergakademie Berlin and is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Urasterella montana by Schuchert (1915) and Owen (1965); it was recombined as Urasterella montanus by Blake and Koniecki (2020).
