Williamsoceras was named by Flower (1964) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-u O Llvi Sepkoski's reference number: 298]. Its type is Williamsoceras adnatum.

It was assigned to Allotrioceratidae by Flower (1964) and Crick (1981); and to Endocerida by Sepkoski (2002).
