Taxonomy
Brevicoceras was named by Flower (1938) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi D Fras Sepkoski's reference number: 299]. Its type is Brevicoceras casteri. It is the type genus of Brevicoceratidae.

It was assigned to Discosorida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Brevicoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Kröger (2008).
