Cyrtogomphoceras was named by Foerste (1924). Its type is Cyrtogomphoceras magnum.

It was assigned to Cyrtogomphoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Crick (1981); and to Discosorida by Sepkoski (2002).
