Discosorus was named by Hall (1852) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-u S Wenl-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. It is the type genus of Discosoridae.

It was assigned to Discosoridae by Teichert et al. (1964); and to Discosorida by Sepkoski (2002).
