Taxonomy
Protaster granuliferus was named by Meek (1872). Its type specimen is MCZ 108074 and is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Alepidaster.

It was recombined as Alepidaster granuliferus by Schuchert (1915); it was recombined as Taeniaster granuliferus by Spencer (1934).
