Protaster gregarius was named by Meek and Worthen (1869). It is the type species of Aganaster.
It was recombined as Alepidaster gregarius by Meek (1872); it was recombined as Aganaster gregarius by Miller and Gurley (1891), Miller (1892), Schuchert (1914), Schuchert (1915), Spencer (1925), Owen (1965) and Jell (1997).
