Taxonomy
Protophragmoceras was named by Hyatt (1900). Its type is Cyrtoceras murchisoni.

It was assigned to Phragmoceratidae by Strand (1934), Teichert et al. (1964) and Chen et al. (1981); and to Discosorida by Sepkoski (2002).
