Phragmoceras was named by Broderip (1839). It is the type genus of Phragmoceratidae.
It was assigned to Phragmoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Miagkova (1967) and Chen et al. (1981); and to Discosorida by Sepkoski (2002).
