Taxonomy
Aviculopecten sumnerensis was named by Newell (1938). Its type specimen is U. Kans. 371.1 and is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Spence Siding, Washington County, which is in an Artinskian marine limestone in the Herington Formation of Kansas.
