Scaphites equalis was named by Sowerby (1813). It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Scaphites, Scaphites (Scaphites).

It was recombined as Scaphites (Scaphites) equalis by Kennedy (1993), Kennedy and Christennsen (1993) and Kennedy et al. (1997).
