Ammonites catinus was named by Mantell (1822) [DISTRIBUTION: Albian-Cenomanian; Cosmopolitan.]. Its type specimen is BMNH C3379, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Fagesia catinus by Kennedy et al. (1987), Kennedy and Simmons (1991), Kennedy (1994), Ifrim and Stinnesbeck (2007) and Barroso-Barcenilla and Goy (2009).
