Taxonomy
Protaster leptosoma was named by Salter (1857).

It was recombined as Sturtzura leptosoma by Gregory (1897), Chapman (1907), Schöndorf (1910), Schuchert (1914) and Schuchert (1915); it was recombined as Rhodostoma leptosoma by Sollas and Sollas (1912); it was recombined as Furcaster leptosoma by Spencer (1925), Owen (1965) and Lewis et al. (2007).
