Ophiurella primigenia was named by Stürtz (1886). It is the type species of Eospondylus.
It was recombined as Eospondylus primigenia by Gregory (1897); it was recombined as Eospondylus primigenius by Schuchert (1915), Spencer (1925), Lehmann (1957) and Owen (1965).
