Taxonomy
Ophiura rhenana was named by Stürtz (1893). It is the type species of Miospondylus.

It was recombined as Miospondylus rhenanus by Gregory (1897), Sollas and Sollas (1912), Schuchert (1915), Spencer (1925), Lehmann (1957) and Owen (1965).
