Acleistoceras was named by Hyatt (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife-u D Give-l Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. It is the type genus of Acleistoceratidae.

It was assigned to Acleistoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); and to Oncoceratida by Sepkoski (2002).
