Hoplites plasticus was named by Paulcke (1907). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Hoplitoplacenticeras plasticus by Klinger and Kennedy (1989); it was recombined as Hoplitoplacenticeras (Hoplitoplacenticeras) plasticum by Cobban and Kennedy (1992).
