Protaster barrisi was named by Hall (1861). Its type specimen is Syntypes MCZ 108083, 108085 and is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Onychaster barrisi by Meek and Worthen (1869), Meek and Worthen (1873), Schuchert (1915), Spencer (1927) and Owen (1965).
