Taxonomy
Pediocaetes was named by Baird (1858). It is extant. Its type is Tetrao phasianellus.

It was corrected as Pedioecetes by Hay (1930); it was misspelled as Pedioecetes by Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956) and Parmalee and Klippel (1982); it was synonymized subjectively with Tympanuchus by Clements et al. (2017).

It was assigned to Gallinae by Shufeldt (1891); and to Tetraonidae by Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Lambrecht (1933), Wetmore (1940), Wetmore (1956) and Parmalee and Klippel (1982).
