Taxonomy
Colinus was named by Goldfuss (1820). It is extant. Its type is Tetrao virginianus. It was considered monophyletic by Eo et al. (2009).
It was assigned to Perdicidae by Lambrecht (1933); to Odontophorinae by Hay (1930), Wetmore (1940) and Wetmore (1956); to Phasianidae by Wetmore (1962) and Parmalee (1992); and to Odontophoridae by Wetmore (1924), Eo et al. (2009) and Clements et al. (2017).
