Codoceras was named by Hyatt (1900). Its type is Codoceras indomitum.

It was assigned to Phragmoceratidae by Strand (1934); to Polyelasmoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); and to Oncoceratida by Sepkoski (2002).
