Sphenoceramus was named by Böhm (1915) [Sepkoski's age data: K Coni-u K Camp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 159].

It was reranked as Inoceramus (Sphenoceramus) by Kennedy et al. (1973) and Scott et al. (1986).

It was assigned to Inoceramus by Kennedy et al. (1973) and Scott et al. (1986); to Inoceramidae by Vokes (1980) and Elder and Box (1992); to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Sphenoceramidae by Bouchet et al. (2010).

W. P. Elder and S. E. Box 1992Commonly large, elongate, equivalve, and Inoceramus-like with trigonal sphenoid outline obliquely elongate to growth axis. Umbo very narrow and sharply rounded. Hinge short; posterior wing small, clearly separated from disk by deep sharp sulcus. Ornamentation of concentric rugae usually superimposed on radial or divergent plicae. Ornamentation weakens or disappears on posterior auricle.
