Zhongornis haoae

Taxonomy
Zhongornis haoae was named by Gao et al. (2008). Its type specimen is DNHM 2455/6, a skeleton (nearly complete specimen with feathers split between a slab and a counterslab), and it is a compression preserving soft parts. Its type locality is Lingyuan City, which is in a Barremian/Aptian lacustrine shale/mudstone in the Yixian Formation of China. It is the type species of Zhongornis.

Gao et al. 2008Small (Table 1) non-pygostylian bird characterised by having the unique combination of the following characters: edentulous jaws; 13–14 differentiated caudal vertebrae; a strut-like and proximally expanded coracoid; an imperforate humeral deltopectoral crest; and a manual phalangeal formula of 2-3-3-x-x with the largest claw on digit I and subequal claws on digits II and III. The condi-tion of having a hand with an unreduced (clawed) digit III with three phalanges is unique among birds.
