Hipparionoceras was named by Flower (1945) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife D Fame Sepkoski's reference number: 299].

It was assigned to Polyelasmoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); and to Oncoceratida by Sepkoski (2002).
