Leonardoceras was named by Flower (1968) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi-l O Llvi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Leonardoceras parvum.

It was assigned to Oncoceratida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Graciloceratidae by Kröger et al. (2009).
