Leoniceras was named by Douvillé (1912). Its type is Pseudotissotia (Choffaticeras) luciae.

It was reranked as Pseudotissotia (Leoniceras) by Basse (1937); it was reranked as Choffaticeras (Leoniceras) by Kennedy (1994), Barroso-Barcenilla and Goy (2007) and Kennedy and Gale (2016).
