Metephippiorthoceras was named by Zhuravleva (1957) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llde-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524].

It was assigned to Oncoceratida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Proteoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Crick (1981) and Kröger et al. (2007).
