Minganoceras was named by Foerste (1938) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-l Sepkoski's reference number: 524].

It was assigned to Valcouroceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Crick (1981); and to Oncoceratida by Sepkoski (2002).
