Nothoceras was named by Barrande (1856) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife-l Sepkoski's reference number: 299,524]. It is the type genus of Nothoceratidae.

It was assigned to Nothoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); and to Oncoceratida by Sepkoski (2002).
