Gwynioidea was named by Williams et al. (2006) [Gwynioidea MacKinnon, in Williams et al. (2006)]. It is extant. Its type is Gwynia.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Williams et al. (2006) and Emig et al. (2013); and to Gwyniidina by Halamski et al. (2015).
