Baculites cylindracea was named by Defrance (1816) [DISTRIBUTION: Campanian-Maastrichtian; Cosmopolitan.]. It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Diplomoceras.
It was recombined as Diplomoceras cylindraceum by Hyatt (1900), Kennedy (1986), Kennedy and Summesberger (1986), Kennedy and Summesberger (1987), Henderson et al. (1992), Ward and Kennedy (1993), Kennedy (1993), Kennedy (1999), Arkadiev et al. (2000), Klinger et al. (2001), Küchler and Odin (2001), Salazar et al. (2010), Ifrim et al. (2015), Dochev and Metodiev (2016) and Kurihara et al. (2016).
