Taxonomy
Hamites annulifer was named by Morton (1824). It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Solenoceras.

It was recombined as Solenoceras annulifer by Kennedy (1993), Kennedy and Cobban (1994) and Kennedy et al. (2000).
