Histrichoceras antipodeus was named by Etheridge (1902). It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Spathiceras.
It was recombined as Spathiceras antipodeum by Whitehouse (1927); it was recombined as Hysteroceras antipodeum by Henderson (1990).
