Taxonomy
Ammonites lobata was named by Tuomey (1856) [DISTRIBUTION: Maastrichtian; Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was synonymized subjectively with Ammonites lenticularis by Kennedy (1986); it was recombined as Sphenodiscus lobatus by Hyatt (1903), Reyment (1955), Zaborski (1982), Zaborski (1985), Al-Harithi and Ibrahim (1992), Kennedy and Cobban (1996), Kennedy et al. (1997) and Moneer et al. (2021).
