Taxonomy
Ptychoceras crassum was named by Whitfield (1877). It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Oxybeloceras.

It was recombined as Oxybeloceras crassum by Hyatt (1900), Kennedy and Cobban (1994), Kennedy et al. (2000) and Ifrim et al. (2015).
