Productus purdoni was named by Davidson (1862).

It was recombined as Productus (Waagenoconcha) purdoni by Chao (1931); it was recombined as Productus (Ruthenia) purdoni by Reed (1944); it was recombined as Waagenoconcha purdoni by Waterhouse (1966), Zhang and Jin (1976) and Shimizu (1981); it was recombined as Contraspina purdoni by Waterhouse (2002).
