Tripleuroceras was named by Hyatt (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl-u D Give-u Sepkoski's reference number: 299,524,1066]. It is the type genus of Tripleuroceratidae.

It was assigned to Tripleuroceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); and to Oncoceratida by Sepkoski (2002).
