Acanthonautilus was named by Foord (1896) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524].

It was assigned to Solenochilidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Shimanskiy (1967); and to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002).
