Anoploceras was named by Hyatt (1900) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Olen Tr Carn-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524,995]. Its type is Nautilus ampezzanus.

It was assigned to Pleuronautilidae by Hyatt (1900); to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Tainoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964), Sobolev (1989) and Miao et al. (2019).
