Aphelaeceras was named by Hyatt (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: C Tour-u C Serp-l Sepkoski's reference number: 524].

It was assigned to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Trigonoceratidae by Hyatt (1894), Teichert et al. (1964), Niko and Mapes (2007) and Korn et al. (2020).
