Apogonoceras was named by Ruzhentsev and Shimanskiy (1954) [Sepkoski's age data: P l]. Its type is Apogonoceras remotum.
It was assigned to Trigonoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Niko and Ozawa (1997); to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Thrincoceratidae by Laptikhovsky et al. (2013).
