Aulaconautilus was named by Spath (1927) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith-u K Vala Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Nautilus sexcarinatus.

It was reranked as Nautilus (Aulaconautilus) by Jeannet (1951).

It was assigned to Nautilus by Jeannet (1951); to Paracenoceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964); to Pseudonautilidae by Shimansky (1975); and to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002).
