Taxonomy
Centroceras was named by Hyatt (1884) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife D Give-u Sepkoski's reference number: 524,1066]. Its type is Goniatites marcellensis. It is the type genus of Centroceratidae.

It was assigned to Nautilida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Centroceratidae by Teichert et al. (1964) and Kröger (2008).
